People normally believe that hospitals are places to get cure from diseases and so generally they are clean, sanitized places where harmful pathogens cannot survive. But it may be shocking to know that hospitals, the places supposed to heal diseases, are spreading diseases because of their insanitary conditions. In the US alone every year, 48,000 Americans die of infections which they catch while they are in the hospitals. A new study published in the American Journal of Infection Control says that nearly half of all hospital rooms tested were contaminated with a deadly, drug-resistant superbug known as Acinetobacter baumannii. In short, these studies show that hospital-acquired infections kill more than 300% Americans than they do by HIV.
Fence grazing crops
There is a saying in the South Indian language Tamil that if fence grazes the crop how can the crop survive? Fence is formed to protect the crops. But if fence overgrows and destroys the crops how can the crops survive? In the same way, hospitals are supposed to be places of treatment and cure. They should be kept clean and tidy. But in reality most of the hospitals show an alarming picture.
A US study
Recently the University of Maryland School of Medicine in the US conducted researches about the sanitary condition in hospitals. They tested hospital furniture and things such as bed rails, tables, supply carts, door knobs, various equipment touch pads, and various things handled in hospitals in order to find out if they are bacteria-free. They were shocked to find most of them contaminated.
In another study, Dr. Ramanan Laxminarayan, PhD, MPH, a senior fellow at the Washington, D.C. has given shocking statistics through his analysis. He and his colleagues focused only on infections acquired in the hospitals in about 40 states in the US. They also revealed how people were infected because of bacteria and virus spread through hospitals. They found out that most of the infections came from using catheters and ventilators. Some of the germs causing the infections have been around for years. They also found that there were some scary new bugs.
Infection conditions in Indian hospitals
India is said to supply medical personnel to the whole world. Hospitals in India have an important role in the economy of the country. Health care industry share a flourishing markethere. But most of the hospitals in the country are in a deplorable condition. Many hospitals are out of date, under-staffed and filthy. Patients in many hospitals are sleeping two in a bed or even on the floor. Patients' families sleep on the floor or in the court-yard, even next to the labor ward. Dangerous insects and rats are frequent visitors in every room. There is no wonder that statistics give frightening figure about infant mortality in the country.
Health is very important. Hospitals should give hope by keeping up hygiene in good condition. Even if they could not cure they should not spread further diseases.
